oh I am so happy! After one more cancellation I finally got to my appointment with the hairstylist today. I am eagerly awaiting my husband's arrival so that he can tell me how fabulous I look! It will be a surprise! So till then you just get what was chopped off!! At the longest was 14 inches and the shortest layer about 4 inches.

So, to whom should I donate it to? I was thinking to send it to go towards hair mats to clean oil spills but since it's such a small contribution it might be more of an impact towards making of a wig.

What about Locks of Love??? Its for kids with cancer who come from families that normally couldn't afford wigs.

Locks of Love provides very few wigs for all the hair donations they receive and the wigs tend to be for people with alopecia, rather than cancer, which is fine, except Locks of Love also sells the donations that they receive for a considerable profit.

I work with a non-profit and we make a profit - enough to sustain us and a little more to carry us over through next year and in times of crisis, like now. Does that make us less good? I doubt it. We need to pay bills, etc. We are a group of four staff and two volunteers. We get a lot of projects that we would love to do but sadly because we can't afford hiring people (like myself, I am a volunteer), we often have to send the projects elsewhere, and we take a reference fee. The for-profit world would call this "commission" and it's fine for them to do!

Locks of Love clearly states where the hair goes on their site. If for some reason people got the idea about it going to cancer kids...well, it's their doing, no? Unless LOL went into some ad campaign misleading people, etc. Then that's a different story. I guess it's a personal choice. They are doing what they can with the handful of people they have. Anyhow, I don't know enough to completely defend them, but the basis in the article (second) one is a common misconception of non-profits.

Anyhow, I doubt my hair is usable. It's dry and I think damaged. I never got it dyed, straightened, permed, but with all the shampoos and stuff... don't know. Hence, my thinking of just sending it for the oil mats. Maybe LOL should consider doing that! ;)

Alternatively I was thinking of sending to Pantene, just because they seem to have the manpowerd to go through it thoroughly, etc.

It doesn't look damaged to me... if you never dyed, straightened or permed your hair, then that's better than 90% of Americans!

I agree with you about LOL. NPO do need to make a profit to sustain them through the hard times, and I don't see anything wrong with what LOL does. I've donated to them multiple times whenever I get a big haircut.

The hair mats sound interesting though! Thanks for sharing that link!

don't they (oil mats)? I heard about them a few years ago, but it was after my big chop in 2002. And after leaving the states I couldn't donate to them the following time. I gave the link to the hair salon... the stylist who started the thing and the one who cut my hair yesterday is also from Alabama! ;) So that made him smile!
