My son fights sleep vigorously at times, too. About a week ago, I spent nine (9!) hours trying to get him to nap. I kid you not. :D The good thing is that after a couple of days like that, he sleeps really well (i.e. most the time) for a few days, and then is back to normal. :)

I'm not sure what kind of wrap you are using, but I have found a few ways to keep my LO's hand free with my Moby-like wrap. It seems to keep him happy if he can use at least one hand for important stuff, such as hitting his own face and poking fingers into his eyes. (I've never said he was a bright one.)

Anyway, if nothing else works - I let the baby sleep on top of me and spend the day on the sofa, even if that means getting nothing done. Or (more ideally) I lay down next to him and read during his nap. I find it easier to "waste" a few hours doing nothing than deal with the pissed off baby for the rest of the day.
